In her letter appointing the Steering Committee, President Simmons charged us not only to examine Browns history, but also to reflect on the meaning and significance of this history in the present. She particularly asked the Committee to examine comparative and historical contexts that might illuminate Browns situation, as well as the broader problem of retrospective justice.
